Jan is pure get-it-done, can-do energy. She’s the lift-the-bags, load-the-car, jump-in-without-hesitation, “I’ve got this” force that keeps everything moving. She turns chaos into action and somehow makes it all look effortless.

Animals are drawn to Jan like she’s got actual magic in her pockets. Dogs. Cats. Everyone. They just know. And she goes so far above and beyond for animals in our community that “extra mile” doesn’t even come close.

Jan, thank you for your strength, your heart, your humour, and your relentless dedication to this work. Lend A Paw simply would not function without you — and we mean that literally.

Today marks the last day of January, and what a month it has been.

In just two weeks, Lend A Paw Pet Food Foundation 🐾 received well over 200 requests for assistance. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we were able to support 120 households and help feed close to 300 pets. The remaining applicants will be eligible once their 60-day period is complete.

Those 120 deliveries represented approximately 6,500 pounds of dry food and 1,800 cans of food distributed across our community — food that exists only because someone chose to give.

We are a small, 100% volunteer-run organization serving a large geographic area with no outside funding. The growing demand is exactly why we moved to a 60-day request cycle … not to limit compassion, but to ensure we can continue helping pets fairly, responsibly, and sustainably.

As we head into February, the need in our community isn’t slowing down… and neither are we. Requests continue to arrive daily, and every bag of food we share depends entirely on donor support.

If you donated, sponsored a bag, dropped food at a partner location, volunteered your time, or shared our posts - this impact belongs to you. Because of you, bowls stayed full, pets stayed with their families, and hope showed up when it was needed most.

Hi friends! We’ve been hearing lots of reports of coyotes cruising neighbourhoods all throughout the Okanagan — from Kelowna down to Osoyoos.

Coyotes are around all year, but mating season (Jan–March) is when they can be extra active, extra bold, and a little… spicy 😅
That means you might see them more often in parks, trails, rural areas, and even right in neighbourhoods.

Good news: a few simple habits can make a BIG difference in keeping your pets safe 🐶🐱❤️

✅ PAW-SITIVE WAYS TO KEEP PETS SAFE

🐕 Keep dogs on a short leash (close = safe!)
🐈 Keep cats indoors / no roaming adventures
🌅 Dawn & dusk = coyote rush hour → supervise pets outside
🏡 Don’t leave small dogs unattended in yards
🍽 Bring pet food & water bowls inside (no free buffets!)
🗑 Lock up garbage/compost in wildlife-proof bins

Across the Central and South Okanagan, rising rents, grocery costs, fuel prices, and tighter household budgets stretched families in ways we have not seen before. For many in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Peachland, Penticton, Oliver, and Osoyoos, getting by became a daily balancing act.

In British Columbia in 2025, about 1.3 million people, nearly 1 in 4 residents, experienced food insecurity. Across Canada, there were 2.2 million food bank visits in a single month, the highest ever recorded.

Behind those numbers are very real, very local stories, the ones we see every week.

We see seniors on fixed incomes doing everything they can to stay independent, often with one small companion animal who brings comfort and purpose. We see working families where one unexpected expense tips everything off balance and they suddenly need help keeping their pets fed. We see people starting over after unsafe situations, holding onto the pet who has been their constant. We see people who say “just this once” and cry with relief when food arrives.

In 2025, Lend A Paw Pet Food Foundation supported over 2,000 pet food deliveries, helped nearly 3,000 dogs and 2,000 cats plus many small animals, and delivered over 100,000 pounds of pet food to keep pets fed and families together.

This support is not just about pet food. It is about dignity, relief, and one less impossible choice.

We want to be transparent with our community. Lend A Paw Pet Food Foundation 🐾 runs on very little and stretches every dollar, donated bag, and volunteer hour as far as possible.

Like many of you, we are feeling the pinch too. Rising costs and increased demand meant we had to adjust our guidelines to one request every 60 days so we can continue showing up fairly and sustainably. If we receive a large donation of food, we will reassess and do our best to return to a 30-day cycle.

We are all just humans doing our best. If you are able to help someone who is struggling in any way, please do. We are stronger together.

We will continue doing everything we can to keep our doors open for pets and the people who love them.

We know that for some families, January can already feel heavy — the holidays are over, routines are shifting, and needs don’t always wait for calendars.

We know that for some families, January can already feel heavy — the holidays are over, routines are shifting, and needs don’t always wait for calendars.

At the moment, we are still “pawsed” and will reopen on January 16 as our volunteers rest, regroup, and prepare for the months ahead. 🐾

and guess what? Every single pet made the NICE list! 🐾💛

Our team has been in full elf-mode, delivering food, Christmas gifts, and tail-wagging joy all across the Okanagan. 🎁🐶🐱✨

A quick reminder: we are “paw-sed” Dec 15–Jan 15, reopening Jan 16.
But Santa Paws stays in stores until Dec 25 so every pet gets a little Christmas magic. 🎄🛍️

So far, we’ve already delivered gifts to nearly 500 pets… and we’re not done yet!
We still have CMHA homes, emergency shelters, and supportive housing units on our list — plus six more days of festive deliveries. 🧑‍🎄🐾💛

To our community: thank you for showing up in full force to help us reach our Santa Paws goals.

Our team has been in full elf-mode, delivering food, Christmas gifts, and tail-wagging joy all across the Okanagan. 🎁🐶🐱✨

A quick reminder: we are “paw-sed” Dec 15–Jan 15, reopening Jan 16.
But Santa Paws stays in stores until Dec 25 so every pet gets a little Christmas magic. 🎄🛍️

So far, we’ve already delivered gifts to nearly 500 pets… and we’re not done yet!
We still have CMHA homes, emergency shelters, and supportive housing units on our list — plus six more days of festive deliveries. 🧑‍🎄🐾💛

To our community: thank you for showing up in full force to help us reach our Santa Paws goals.
And to our volunteers — who give up time with their families, spend their own gas money, and pour so much heart into every delivery — we see you, we appreciate you, and we couldn’t do this without you. ❤️🥣✨

If you’re heading out with your furry sidekick, be prepared for winter conditions as soon as you leave the valley. Weather can change fast at higher elevations, so a little preparation goes a long way.

Here are a few cold-weather travel tips:

🐾 Secure your pet with a proper carrier or seatbelt harness
Snowy, slippery roads can mean sudden stops — keep them safe.

🐾 Pack a winter pet kit / go-bag
Include a blanket, extra food, water, collapsible bowl, medications, poo bags, leash, first-aid supplies, a copy of vet records, and comfort items — everything your pet may need for 24–72 hours if you’re delayed, stuck, or need to shelter unexpectedly.

In the past 24 hours, Lend A Paw Pet Food Foundation has received requests for help for over 60 pets. While we know this is the busiest time of year, at this pace we’ll see more than 2,000 additional pets needing assistance before December 15.

At the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we pause to honour the courage and sacrifice of all who have served and continue to serve our country in times of war and peace.

Today we also remember the devoted animals who stood beside them. From carrying vital messages to detecting danger, comforting soldiers, rescuing the injured, and helping transport supplies, their loyalty and bravery have saved lives and lifted spirits during our nation’s most difficult moments.

These incredible animals have supported Canadians since before the First World War and continue to stand with those who serve at home and abroad.

We are deeply grateful to every veteran, every serving member, and every animal who gave their strength, their loyalty, and in many cases, their lives.

Lest we forget. 🌺🐾

When you’ve got this much pet food around, it sometimes attracts the furry ones we don’t actually feed — the sneaky kind with tiny paws and long tails! 😅🐀

Our SEA containers do a great job keeping them out, but our trusty little “dog house” storage isn’t quite as tough. So today, Jan and Mickey became our official pest-proofing team! 💪🐾

They scrubbed, cleaned, plugged holes, and spray-foamed like pros — making sure our food stays for the pets it’s meant for. Hopefully, the mice and rats get the message and scurry off to friendlier digs (no hard feelings — they’re just hungry too 💛).

Every week, our volunteers roll up their sleeves, gas up their cars, and make sure tails stay wagging and bowls stay full across the Okanagan. 🥣🐾

💛 Lending a Paw Beyond the Bowl

Some days, our work at Lend A Paw Pet Food Foundation 🐾 looks a little different. While most days are spent packing food and deliveries for families across the Central and South Okanagan, today we paused to make sure some of our much-loved partner organizations had what they needed too.

Even though we’re often running low ourselves, we know pet food insecurity isn’t just a challenge here — it’s everywhere. So today, we sent dog food north to our friends at All Are Family Outreach Society to help pets in areas where our services don’t reach. ❤️🐾

We also made a stop to support Outreach in their mission to keep our unhoused and marginalized community members safe and warm. Thanks to our friends at For Rescues- with Love, we were able to share cozy toques to warm heads — and jackets to keep furry friends snug as the nights get colder. 🧤🧥🐕

💛 Lending a Paw Beyond the Bowl

Some days, our work at Lend A Paw Pet Food Foundation 🐾 looks a little different. While most days are spent packing food and deliveries for families across the Central and South Okanagan, today we paused to make sure some of our much-loved partner organizations had what they needed too.

Even though we’re often running low ourselves, we know pet food insecurity isn’t just a challenge here — it’s everywhere. So today, we sent dog food north to our friends at All Are Family Outreach Society to help pets in areas where our services don’t reach. ❤️🐾

We also made a stop to support Outreach in their mission to keep our unhoused and marginalized community members safe and warm. Thanks to our friends at For Rescues- with Love, we were able to share cozy toques to warm heads — and jackets to keep furry friends snug as the nights get colder. 🧤🧥🐕

Our youngest team mascot, Willa, is having her spay surgery today 💕

Spaying and neutering isn’t just about preventing litters — it helps pets live longer, healthier lives and keeps more animals out of shelters. Every surgery means fewer unwanted litters and more full bowls for the pets already in loving homes. 🥣💛

As we gather around full tables and fuller hearts, let’s make sure our pets stay safe and happy too! Here are a few common holiday hazards to watch out for 👇

🦴 No Turkey Bones, Please!
Cooked bones can splinter and cause serious injuries — offer a pet-safe chew instead.

🧅 Skip the Stuffing (and the Onions)
These ingredients are toxic to dogs and cats, even in small amounts.

🍫 No Sweets for the Sweeties
Chocolate, xylitol, and rich desserts can make pets very sick. Keep treats well out of reach.

🍗 Watch the Fatty Foods
Greasy leftovers and gravy can cause painful pancreatitis. Stick to their regular meals — they’ll thank you later.

🌻 Mind the Decorations
Candles, corn cobs, and strings can look like toys but cause trouble fast.

🐕‍🦺 Guests & Door Dashes
With doors opening and closing, make sure pets have updated ID tags and a calm spot to retreat to.
