Protecting Pets from Toxic Plants in the Okanagan

The Okanagan’s beauty comes with hidden dangers for pets. Some local plants—both native and invasive—can be toxic, causing anything from mild irritation to serious illness.

Toxic Plants to Watch For:

1. Myrtle Spurge – Found in gardens and disturbed soil. Its milky sap irritates skin and eyes; ingestion may cause vomiting and temporary blindness.
2. Foxglove – Beautiful but dangerous. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, heart issues, and seizures.
3. Climbing Nightshade – A vine with red berries. All parts are toxic, especially unripe berries. Can cause weakness, nausea, and breathing issues.
4. Poison Ivy – Common along trails. Its oil can transfer from fur to skin, causing painful rashes in pets and people.

Keep Pets Safe:
• Avoid tall grass and dense vegetation on walks
• Learn to identify local toxic plants
• Check your yard and garden regularly
• Do daily checks after outdoor time
• Wear gloves when removing plants
• Consult your vet if you’re unsure about a plant’s safety

To honor his majestic purr-sonality, we’re kicking off a campaign to gather something we’re always short on—dry cat food.

May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month

As the Okanagan warms up, so does tick activity. These tiny pests are more than just a nuisance — they can carry Lyme disease, a serious illness that affects both dogs and humans. Ticks become active in spring, even when temperatures are as low as 4°C, so early prevention is key.

What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is spread through the bite of an infected black-legged tick (commonly known as the deer tick). For the disease to be transmitted, the tick typically needs to be attached for 12 to 24 hours.

Signs of Lyme Disease in Dogs:
• Limping or stiff joints
• Fatigue or low energy
• Loss of appetite
• Fever
• Swollen lymph nodes
• In severe cases, kidney issues (which can be life-threatening)

If you notice these symptoms, especially after tick exposure, contact your veterinarian right away.

• Stick to paths: Avoid tall grass, bushes, and wooded areas during walks.
• Check daily: After outdoor time, do a full-body tick check — especially around the ears, toes, tail, underarms, and under the collar.

• Ask about the Lyme vaccine: Not every dog needs it, but it can be a good extra layer of protection for some.

Did you know Lend A Paw runs 100% on volunteer power? That’s right—no outside funding, just big hearts and hard work! Every donation packed, every bag delivered, every email answered… it’s all thanks to our amazing volunteers.

And speaking of amazing… meet Louise and her adorable sidekick Oliver!

Louise is the kind of volunteer who jumps in wherever she’s needed—always making sure pets are fed and tails keep wagging. Here’s what she had to say about why she volunteers:

*“I’ve always been a keen supporter of the Food Bank so when I was looking for a volunteer opportunity, I knew Lend a Paw, the Food Bank for Pets, would be a good fit for me. It has been my pleasure to deliver much needed pet food to people who might otherwise have to surrender their pets or go without themselves in order to feed them, pet food being so very expensive. I am humbled by the kind and grateful people I meet who just love their pets as much as we all do. The ladies of Lend a Paw are caring and hard-working and I am happy to help them in their cause.”

Did you know Lend A Paw runs 100% on volunteer power? That’s right—no outside funding, just big hearts and hard work! Every donation packed, every bag delivered, every email answered… it’s all thanks to our amazing volunteers.

And speaking of amazing… meet Louise and her adorable sidekick Oliver!

Louise is the kind of volunteer who jumps in wherever she’s needed—always making sure pets are fed and tails keep wagging. Here’s what she had to say about why she volunteers:

*“I’ve always been a keen supporter of the Food Bank so when I was looking for a volunteer opportunity, I knew Lend a Paw, the Food Bank for Pets, would be a good fit for me. It has been my pleasure to deliver much needed pet food to people who might otherwise have to surrender their pets or go without themselves in order to feed them, pet food being so very expensive. I am humbled by the kind and grateful people I meet who just love their pets as much as we all do. The ladies of Lend a Paw are caring and hard-working and I am happy to help them in their cause.”

April whooshed by faster than a cheetah on double espresso—and wow, did we get things done! Despite the economy doing loop-de-loops, our superhero donors and paws-itively amazing community rallied to help us feed over 227 dogs and 202 cats. But wait—there’s more! Guinea pigs, birds, and even those sneaky little reptiles got to chow down, too.

We hit a bump when guinea pig food ran low (cue dramatic music), but a heroic donor swooped in with tasty reinforcements. Crisis averted. Guinea pigs rejoiced. Tiny happy dances were done.

BIG TAIL-WAGGING NEWS:
We served 50% more cats and dogs this April than we did in April 2024! While we wish fewer families were in need, we’re so grateful to be part of a community that never hesitates to lend a paw. You all deserve the biggest belly rubs and ear scritches (yes, even the humans).

Our volunteer squad? Total rockstars. They made over 210 doorstep deliveries, making sure pets stayed cozy, comfy, and full—right where they belong: at home with their people.

At Lend A Paw Pet Food Foundation, we’re here to keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching. We believe pets should stay with the humans who love them—not end up in shelters just because life got tough.

If you hear a disembodied “where’s Jolene” or an out of place wolf whistle, a Kelowna woman is hoping you don't turn away.

Bev Kenzie is looking for her 18-year-old parrot, named Thumper. He wriggled out of the towel he was in when being moved back inside from his outside aviary on Quigley Road Wednesday night and took off.

“My heart is so broken, but I am hoping for success. I hope someone can find him,” Kenzie said.

“He’s not a big flyer, so he won’t be flying from house to the other house. He’s probably perched somewhere and hiding.”

He may also be speaking.

Kenzie said he often can be heard saying “Where’s Jolene?” “hello,” “what are you doing,” and he does a “lot of wolf whistling.”

It means that, thanks to @kraveinktattoostudio and their clients, we’ve been able to provide food for over 400 dogs and cats throughout the month. Without the generous support of our community sponsors like Krave Ink, we wouldn't be able to sustain our operations month after month, leaving many animals without food. Many residents in the Central and South Okanagan have expressed that they could keep their pets with their families thanks to the assistance from Lend A Paw. A heartfelt thank you to Kendra! Thanks to Rosie and your pack for organizing such a fun fundraiser! We truly appreciate it! This amazing campaign will continue for a little while longer, so keep getting inked for our furry friends!

ZOOOOM! March sped by like a cheetah on a double espresso! The economy has been quite the rollercoaster, but thanks to our superhero donors and reliable community allies, we've managed to feed over 225 dogs and 202 cats. And that's not all! Guinea pigs, birds, and even those sly reptiles enjoyed their meals too. However, we're currently facing a challenge with supplies for small animals, particularly for our fluffy guinea pig friends.

This March, we exceeded our efforts by providing food to over 100 more cats and dogs than we did in March 2024. While we wish there were fewer families in need, we understand that times are tough! We are truly grateful to have a community that rises to the occasion every time. High paws and tail wags all around!

Our amazing volunteers have been on a whirlwind mission, completing over 230 doorstep deliveries to ensure pets remain comfortable at home, even when their kibble supply runs low.

At Lend A Paw Pet Food Foundation, we try to serve as a safety net for Okanagan pet parents who need a little extra support to keep their pets' bowls full. Our goal is to help pets stay with their beloved humans rather than ending up in rescues or shelters. The economy's been a roller-coaster ride, but thanks to the heartwarming generosity of our donors and solid backing from community sponsors, we've filled the bellies of over 400 dogs and 350 cats. We've also extended our love to a charming mix of guinea pigs, birds, reptiles and more.

Our dedicated volunteers have been burning the midnight oil, making over 350 doorstep deliveries ensuring that cherished pets can remain with their families, even in times of food scarcity.

We've managed to circulate an eye-popping 13,375 pounds of dry food, a number that seems almost surreal. While we'd love to hang up our hats and say that our mission is accomplished, the reality is that more and more people are reaching out for a helping paw. At Lend A Paw, we believe in the power of unity. We work hand in paw with community organizations to address gaps in the system, all in the name of enhancing communal well-being.
